It’s been a tough season for the Washington Wizards, followed by NBA free agency rumors about John Wall signing with a different team. The Boston Celtics took game 7 of the series against the Wizards, advancing with a 4-3 edge, bringing the Washington Wizards down to #4 on the Eastern Conference ladder. With their season over, Wizards star John Wall has some decisions to make. There are NBA free agency rumors that Wall will be offered a big contract extension with the Washington Wizards in July. Or, he can test the free agency waters. For Wall, there will be plenty of offers. Find out more about his contract extension on The Big Lead.
NBA Free Agency Rumors on Wall and his Extension
Wall is now eligible to sign a “designated veteran player extension” starting in July. That deal likely would pay somewhere around $36 million per year and be for four years. It would start in the 2019-20 season because of the two years left on Wall’s current contract. The Wizards will almost certainly make him that offer as soon as they’re able to.
Wall is set to make $18.06 million next season and $19.16 million in 2018-19. But here’s the kicker: if he makes another All-NBA team sometime in the next two years, he would be eligible for a five-year DVP extension. So he could either take the four-year extension this offseason, or bet on himself over the next two years and make that deal even bigger.
Wall is a four-time All-Star but this was the first time he’s made an All-NBA team. He’s 26 and just finished his seventh NBA season and it was by far his best. Wall notched career-highs in points (23.1), assists (10.7), steals (2.0), field goal percentage (45.1) and PER (23.28). His stock will never be higher, which means he should seriously consider taking the extension in July.
If Wall signs this extension now, he won’t be able to sign the 5-year DVP extension later on. If he makes another All-NBA team two years from now, he’s going to be making less money than he could have. But after making NBA history in this season’s playoffs, it’s no surprise the Washington Wizards want to discuss and offer him an extension two years before his current contract expires. There’s no doubt the Wizards want Wall to stay with the team as he rises up the NBA ranks of greatness.
If The NBA Free Agency Rumors Are True
— Mike Slonina (@Slo_24) June 20, 2017
John Wall easily had the biggest presence for the Wizards during this season’s playoffs. During game 7 against the Boston Celtics, Wall blamed the bench for the team’s loss. The bench was heavily outscored, and Wall had to fill in for most of the game. If the Washington Wizards lose John Wall, they’ll lose their franchise player and any hope of other star players signing on.

Will John Wall Sign The Contract Extension?
For Wall, the question now is whether he should settle with the 4-year extension or risk everything for that 5-year DVP extension two years from now.Whether or not John Wall decides to sign that extension in July, he’s got two more years with the team to make NBA history and keep the Washington Wizards in the spotlight.
