No matter how great our lives may be, there’s always something missing if we’re going through it alone. Although you’re seeing all the results you’ve ever dreamed of at the gym, and your career is going great, you might find that you still feel alone. We all need love. The definition of finding love varies depending on who you ask. You’ve probably heard friends say it’s elusive, intimidating, or worse, a traumatic experience among others, but how did they come up with these answers?
The worst thing that could happen is for their mindset to rub on you. To avoid that, here are five common misconceptions about finding love and why these beliefs are flawed.

1. Love is Out of Your Control
Always work on preparing yourself for your other half. It takes two to tango. Make sure once the right person comes along, you are finally well-prepared to embark on a committed relationship. Set goals, have a purpose, and communicate those with her. Do not hesitate to take the lead but also make it a point to meet her halfway. Basically, don’t just dream about finding love, go out there and make it happen by pursuing interests and finding someone with those same interests.
2. Love Will Come to You
Live your life and look for love. Find yourself, process fears, and work toward becoming the best you. Make it a conscious effort to look at people who bring out the best in you. It is normal to be afraid of getting hurt, it’s just one of the many consequences of finding love. It may take months or years to materialize, but nothing beats love built on a solid foundation. But don’t just wait for love to come to you, go out and find it. Talk to women at bars, visit bookstores, take a yoga class…. Be proactive in your search for love! And don’t shy away from online dating options. These days, they work better than ever!
3. Love Should Occur Naturally
Don’t refuse to be proactive in your search. Be deliberate on your path to find love. That whole “we saw each other across the room and instantly fell in love” thing is bull. Love grows over time, and there are countless stories of love which started out as the opposite. If you’re really into someone, make an effort. Don’t just sit there and wait for a mutual love to happen at exactly the same time and place. Love does occur naturally, but sometimes it takes a bit of a push — so don’t be afraid to make an effort!
4. Everyone is Already in a Relationship
The world is full of millions of people. Opportunities are abundant to meet people in person and virtually. All your friends might be getting married and having kids. But there are billions of people in the world, and they are NOT all in relationships! Don’t just assume women are already taken. Imagine walking past the girl you like and never getting the chance to know what could have been? That’s just sad. There are plenty of opportunities to meet people, so don’t be afraid to approach a woman. Just because she’s beautiful doesn’t mean she’s already taken. Just keep an eye out for wedding rings 😉
5. No One Compatible Is Left
Know what you are looking for. Be proactive when finding a match. Don’t compare yourself to others and their relationships. Everyone is unique in their own ways. Do not let conflicting interests and views stand in the way of getting to know someone deeper but also decide on what you truly want. Learning to accept a person from the other side of the spectrum should make you understand even yourself better. Online dating sites like Match and eHarmony focus on matching compatible couples, and even tinder and bumble offer great opportunities to see if you’re compatible with someone just by talking to them!
